Investigations of Copper Corrosion in Plumbing Systems

Blue water staining

In the last five years we have carried out over 100 investigations into Corrosion failures in copper pipework / plumbing systems. Corrosion failures in hot and cold water systems usually only occur where there is a combination of adverse circumstances involving design, installation, operation and water quality factors. Problems manifest themselves in leakage (due to erosion corrosion or pitting), valve seizures or in blue water, which has health implications and causes staining of sanitary ware. In addition to copper, failures of other construction materials including galvanised steel, cast irons and stainless steels may occur.

Failure investigations in plumbing/domestic water systems can take as little as half a day or a long as a few weeks, in complex cases involving many properties. In all cases, recommendations are given to help prevent further occurrences of the problem. Expert witness testimonies for court cases can be provided.
